AP06 Chasing wheat yields in challenging environments

This project makes use of known cloned yield component markers (targeted from Literature), in an attempt to accumulated favourable alleles to increase yield. The traits targeted to date are, grain size, TKM, grain number and tiller number. Recently, new root phenotyping methods were devised and optimised to determine root angle and root biomass at seedling stage. The lines tested in this project, all come out of CIMMYT or ICARDA nurseries. So far, 19 different nurseries have been selected from for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018. The yield related nurseries are primarily targeted, however, other non-target nurseries are giving some promising yielding germplasm. In 2018, the first field yield potential trial was conducted on this project. A number of commercial breeders have made selections out of this trial for planting in their elite trails this season.
